This Zenith El Primero A3817 dates from the early 1970s. The striking three-color dial reminds us of the legendary Zenith Reference A386. However, there is a difference between the dials of these two references in the sub-dial of the current second at 9 o'clock.
The reference A386 has a blue pointer and blue indices. In the A386, however, all sub-dials are provided with white indices and white pointers. The watch also has a red paddle hand, which can be found in many El Primero family chronographs. The white dial is surrounded by a gray ring that displays both a tachymeter and a pulsation scale.
This Zenith is powered by the legendary El Primero factory. The caliber 3019 PHC was presented in 1969 as the first automatic chronograph in the world. Other major watch brands such as Movado and Rolex used this movement for their watches. One example is the Rolex Daytona 16520, which is also nicknamed "Zenith Daytona". The El Primero movement even has a date-quick switch that saves a lot of time in setting the date and is a rare feature for a 1970's watch.
This Zenith El Primero A3917 has been in a very good overall condition. The dial shows natural signs of aging. The white surface has beautiful patina, which gives this watch an honest vintage character. The stainless steel case still has its original brushed surface and sharp edges. The serial number on the case back is clearly legible. The winding crown and caseback are signed with the NATO star. The inside of the case bottom shows the engraving "SP 1301". This refers to the housing manufacturer Spillman.
An absolute peculiarity of this offer is the present accessory, which is rather uncommon and rare for vintage Zenith watches. An original red Zenith box and an original warranty booklet with date of sale and seller stamp. This watch was sold in Italy on 21.05.1977.
About 1000 copies of reference A3817 were made. Compared to about 2500 copies of the reference A386, the reference A3817 is even rarer than its famous sister.
