This super-rare Zenith S.58 from 1964 impresses with its excellent condition and it is accompanied by the original stainless steel NSA bracelet.
The Zenith S.58 is a robust diver's watch that was produced between 1958 and 1968. The watch guaranteed a water resistance of 150 meters, which was above average back then. The letter S in the model name stands for "Scaphandre" - the French word for diving suit. The number 58 refers to the year 1958, when the model was introduced.
Four generations of the Zenith S.58 are known: the first two had a fixed metal bezel, followed by two variants with a rotatable bakelite bezel. This example is the fourth and last version of the Zenith S.58 with a silver-colored dial, a black bakelite bezel and the automatic caliber 2542PC. When it comes to the collectability of vintage watches, their condition is known to be the most important criterion. That is exactly what makes this Zenith S.58 so special. It is absolutely amazing how well preserved this example is. Firstly because of the old age which is about 60 years. And secondly, because the S.58 was not a collector's watch back then, but a tool watch, which is why most examples were used regularly. An absolute exception is the S.58 you see here. The watch was rarely on the wrist and probably spent a long time in a safe.
The stainless steel case is unpolished and retains its original profile with sharp lugs. The old dial is in excellent condition and gained a beautiful vintage patina. It is signed "swiss made" at 6 o'clock. The rectangular date window is at 3 o'clock. The crown is original and shows the zenith star.
The black rotatable bakelite bezel mostly has rough scratches or even chips. Not so with this watch: the bezel is immaculately preserved and has original tritium in the minute markers and in the luminous triangle at 12 o'clock. The tritium in the dauphine hands and on the dial has also passed the UV test and is 100% original. The screwed case back bears a deep engraving of the model name S.58. The watch is powered by a very robust automatic caliber 2542PC from Martel/Zenith, which operates flawlessly and keeps time accurately.
The absolute highlight of this Zenith S.58 is its original NSA stainless steel mesh bracelet. Such mesh bracelets are extremely rare and sought after. The clasp is signed with the Zenith logo. The bracelet is also preserved in excellent condition.
The vintage Zenith S.58 is very popular with collectors due to its classic design and rarity. An unpolished case, a flawless dial and an original steel bracelet make this S.58 irretrievable.
