This Audemars Piguet is special and rare in many ways.
The Disco Volante (Italian synonym for a UFO) is a coveted timepiece that was launched in the 1950s and was produced until the end of the 1960s. Versions in yellow and white gold are rare but occasionally appear on the market. This example, however, is almost unique: a Disco Volante in precious platinum combined with a white gold bracelet - a true rarity among the models of this era.
Designed by the visionary Gérald Genta, this Disco Volante was ahead of its time. With its diamond bezel and silver-coloured dial, it still exudes a futuristic charm that makes it hard to believe that it dates from the 1950s. The last two digits on the back of the bezel prove that it is an Audemars Piguet original: they are the last two digits of the case number.
The remarkable slenderness of this model, made possible by Audemars Piguet's ultra-thin Calibre 2003, is particularly appreciated - a true masterpiece of Swiss watchmaking and technical sophistication.
The combination of platinum case and white gold bracelet was also used by other prestigious watch brands of the time. The fact that the bracelet is unsigned adds further authenticity to this watch, as unsigned white gold bracelets for platinum watches were a speciality that was also used by renowned manufacturers such as Piaget.
All in all, this is an extremely rare, if not unique, variant of a coveted vintage model from the renowned house of Audemars Piguet.
